Introduction

A ground-up redesign of the website for All Points Advising, a consultancy that provides HR, admin, research and writing, copy editing, cybersecurity, and training services to small businesses and nonprofits. The previous site was dated, slow, and difficult to use for people relying on assistive technology — the rebuild replaced it with a clean, fast, accessible site that presents the firm's services clearly and loads noticeably quicker. Built jointly with my design partner Laurel, who led the visual design.

The Challenge

All Points Advising's existing website was dated, slow, and inaccessible to users relying on assistive technology. The site needed a complete rebuild that would modernize its appearance, improve performance, and ensure usability for all visitors while remaining maintainable by the client's team.

The Outcome

25–30% faster

Load times improved compared to the previous site through front-end optimization and payload reduction.

Backend

  • WordPress
  • Cloudflare
  • WordPress as the content platform, so the client's team can keep service pages, resources, and the blog current without developer involvement.
  • Hand-written, semantic HTML and CSS for the front end, with JavaScript used sparingly and only where interaction genuinely needs it — a deliberate reaction to the heaviness of the old site.
  • Responsive, mobile-first layout driven by the design system Laurel produced, implemented against the existing content structure (Home, Services, About Us, Resources, Blog, Contact Us).
  • The production site is fronted by Cloudflare, which sits outside the scope of our build work.

Key Implementation Details

Accessibility Remediation — The prior site was effectively unusable with assistive technology, so accessibility was treated as a build requirement rather than a post-launch fix.

  • Rebuilt the markup around semantic HTML elements and a proper heading hierarchy so screen readers get a meaningful document outline.
  • Verified keyboard navigation and focus behaviour across the full navigation and page templates.
  • Worked with the design to keep colour contrast and type sizing within accessible ranges from the start, instead of retrofitting them later.

Performance Rebuild — Load times improved by 25–30% against the previous site.

  • Cut the front-end payload down by writing lean CSS and avoiding the accumulated plugin and script bloat that slowed the old build.
  • Kept JavaScript to the minimum needed, so pages render without waiting on non-essential scripts.

Visual Refresh Implemented Faithfully — Laurel designed the new look; we built it together.

  • Translated the design into reusable, consistent front-end components so pages share the same type scale, spacing, and treatments.
  • Kept the implementation close to the design intent while flagging and resolving cases where a design choice would have created an accessibility or performance cost.

Editor-Friendly Content Model — Structured the WordPress templates so the service, resource, and blog content the firm publishes regularly can be updated directly, without breaking the layout or reintroducing the inconsistencies that made the old site feel dated.

What I Contributed

  • Rebuilt the front end with semantic HTML and a proper heading hierarchy, verified keyboard navigation and focus behaviour, and ensured colour contrast and type sizing met accessibility standards from the start.
  • Reduced front-end payload and eliminated plugin bloat, cutting load times by 25–30% through lean CSS and minimal JavaScript.
  • Translated the design system into reusable front-end components while flagging cases where design choices would create accessibility or performance costs.
  • Structured WordPress templates so service, resource, and blog content could be updated by the client's team without breaking the layout.

Outcome

  • Site now fully accessible to users with assistive technology, with semantic markup, keyboard navigation, and proper colour contrast.

  • Client team can maintain and update content independently without developer involvement.

All Points Advising now has a site that loads 25–30% faster than its predecessor, works for visitors using assistive technology, and looks current rather than a decade old. It's live in production and maintainable by the client's own team, with a lean front end that should stay fast as the content grows.
